Bring on summer with restorative yoga!

Happy Summer Solstice!

I hope you have been able to get out and enjoy the abundant sunshine and light that this longest day of the year brings. With so much light and accompanying activities that come with summer, my body and mind crave restorative yoga and relaxation to help me find a sense of balance. A regular restorative yoga practice, mindfulness, and meditation are often what I need to help keep stress and anxiety at bay. I invite you to join me once a month for just over an hour of pampering yourself with restorative yoga.

Quick reminder...my next monthly restorative yoga class will be this Sunday, June 24th from 4:30-5:45pm at Balance Studios in Victor, Idaho. The next class is scheduled for July 22nd.

Sunday, June 24th & July 22nd at Balance Studios:
All-levels Restorative Yoga class at Balance Studios from 4:30-5:45pm. Using props and supporting poses, this class will help you reset and feel great. Beginners and prenatal students also welcome. Please sign-up online before my classes using Balance Studios' Mind Body scheduling software (If you forget or don't have time, no worries, but we are hoping students will start to get in the habit of doing this. Online registration closes 1 hour before class; you can also text me at 208-313-3503 for last minute sign-ups. Thank you!).

Various Hummingbird Yoga Classes Scheduled:
Wednesday, July 11th: 12:30-1pm (Yoga Nidra; $5 drop-in): Yoga Nidra is guided relaxation often held in a supported and restorative corpse pose. It is different than meditation in that the practice is fully guided and helps you drop into a mental state between consciousness and sleep. It is a great way to feel refreshed, and 30 minutes can even be more rejuvenating than a 3 hour nap!
Saturday, August 4th: 9-10:30am (Heated Vinyasa Yoga; 87 degrees F)
Wednesday, August 8th: 12:30-1pm (Yoga Nidra; $5 drop-in)

All the best to you!
-Jen

*Please note, my Sunday afternoon Yoga Flow class series typically held from 4:30-5:45pm is on-hold for the summer months. I hope to resume this class in October (I will still teach once/month restorative classes, typically the 4th Sunday of each month unless noted). You may also see me from time to time subbing and teaching at studios throughout the valley such as Hummingbird Yoga in Driggs. I also am still teaching individual and group private classes. Please contact me if you are interested.

Do you align your intentions and actions with seasonal/inevitable environmental changes?

3/2/2018

Greetings yogis and yoginis! While March has roared in like a lion, spring is officially just over 2 weeks away. While I have lived in Teton Valley for a decade and grew up in the west, I still am fascinated by the constant flux (aka "spanda") that is so common in the Rockies. This constant change, however, can leave some of us feeling a bit depleted, sick, scattered, or stuck. Springtime often brings more moisture and heavy qualities in contrast to our cold, airy, and dry winters. Do you align your intentions and actions with these inevitable environmental changes?

Quick tip to deal with these physical and emotional transitions:
Practice yoga and/or mindfulness and self-care. Well Duh.
Yes, I know you've heard that before. It is true. Each seasonal transition is a time to cleanse yourself of limiting beliefs, bad habits, heavy/processed food, and other things that DO NOT serve you. When you practice yoga and other mindfulness practices, exercise and move, and eat real whole foods, you will have more flow for yourself and those around you. As a busy working mom, I know it is hard to fit ALL of it in, but most of it is just showing up and trying.

Anyway, I hope to see you this spring as we show up and seriously take care of our AWESOME selves at my weekly Sunday yoga class in Victor.

YOGA FRIEND SPECIAL!
Bring a friend to yoga this 8-week session and each receive $8 off for the session price (making it $72 each) or $5 off a 5-class card ($55 vs. $60) or $10 off a 10-class card ($100 vs. $110). Cards expire within 6 months. *Must mention this offer.

My March/April 8-week yoga flow class series will focus on transitions and self-care. As I've gotten older and hopefully wiser, I have fallen in love with a more self-inquiry approach to yoga and don't practice the "fancy" yoga poses as much as I did when I started this journey. Yoga is a way for me to help stay balanced in the midst of life's constant changes, stress, and "imbalances" as I've aged. I still charge hard sometimes on the slopes or on my bike, but...

YOGA is my time to unwind, restore, and keep injury and stress at bay. This next session will incorporate both new and old yoga poses and sequences, but we will take EXTRA care to listen within, practice from a place of intention, and help us move more effortlessly into spring.

Here's to showing up,

Jen

P.S. Please stay tuned for a 3-day Ayurveda Group Cleanse I will be offering mid-April. I'm still figuring out details and exact dates, but will be cleansing together with you. After a decade of studying Ayurveda and practicing seasonal cleanses, my intention is to help support you (and hold myself accountable!). Details forthcoming!

How injury can be our teacher

Whelp...an overzealous start to the new year, compounded with stress and work has left me with a manageable, yet uncomfortable neck/shoulder injury that is causing referred finger numbing in my right fingers.  As some of you may know, I had a pretty stressful pre-holiday family emergency with my son (he is doing great now), but that was just the beginning. I am not sure exactly what caused my injury, but suffice to say, it has left me humbled and simultaneously grateful for my yoga and meditation practice. Rest assured, I am still teaching yoga (in fact, demand for privates and subbing has increased the past two weeks, and my practice is helping to alleviate painful symptoms). In any event, I often hear from yoga students who are injured that he/she cannot practice yoga. I would flip this around and say that when you are injured is the MOST IMPORTANT time to practice yoga...that is if you practice with mindfulness (so don't do poses that hurt you), and practice proper alignment.  Yoga is therapy when you're physically or emotionally out-of-sorts.

Yoga isn't about getting a tight ass, though that's just an added bonus. Yoga is way to align our actions with our intentions and be fully present. This is mindfulness and self-awareness. Yes, I would dare say that my yoga practice has helped prevent countless injuries from other activities, but it has also been an amazing tool to realize what I actually can do, in spite of being injured. It also helps make you more content when navigating life's ups and downs by practicing non-attachment.

So, this is my take away for you - come to yoga when you feel down or are injured (that is with approval from your doctor). Shoot me a quick message if there is something I should know about in advance. I can work with you to safely modify the practice as you begin to move more mindfully, while listening to your intuition. You can even do savasana (corpse pose) or stay in restorative poses if you'd like! I once went to a yoga class while stressed out in grad school and stayed in savasana for 80% of the class because that is what I needed! It was awesome.

Take care!

Purposefully spring into positive action

March is often known as the month of rebirth and renewal. As the snow fades away, flowers and grass are slowly emerging showing us that spring has arrived. Okay, well I may be getting ahead of myself a little bit, as we still have three weeks until it is officially spring, but the energy of renewal and hope has arrived! With this in mind, perhaps notice how each time you do a pose (or any activity for that matter), the moment you are in has never happened before. Since life is always changing, so is your experience. This keen awareness of the present moment can also be applied to your relationships and responsibilities. The rebirth of springtime, the Liberation of Passover, the Resurrection of Easter can all be seen as metaphors for our own ability to transform. This could be from the bondage of the past and the limiting beliefs you’ve held about what is or is not possible. Through the practice of yoga and other mindful activities, we can plant seeds of intention in the fertile landscapes of our consciousness. So, no matter what has happened in the past, you can relate to the present moment with freshness and curiosity.

It seems fitting with this season of change and renewal that Balance Studios has also moved to a new location just around the corner. The studio is now on Main Street next door to the liquor store and upstairs by Roots Hair Salon.

Beginning tomorrow, March 1st, another candlelit yoga session on Wednesday evenings at Balance Studios will also begin at the new location. This will be a 5-week yoga session from Wednesday, March 2-March 30th.

Please register in-advance if you plan on joining us. Class information and pricing is here.

New Wednesday evening yoga session starts March 2nd:
Wednesdays All-Levels Candlelit Flow Yoga at Balance Studios in Victor from 6:30-7:45pm. This class series and accompanying poses will focus on renewal, alignment, and core strength. You'll gain flexibility and stamina and help to unwind from the day. This is a flowing, alignment-based class, and is suitable for all levels, from beginners to seasoned practitioners.

As always, if you have any questions about the changes, schedules, class requests, etc., please contact me by phone, email, or message me on Facebook. Have a great day!

Om shanti, shanti, shanti (peace, peace, peace),

I hope you had a wonderful holiday season surrounded by friends and family. I admit, I love the start of a new year. While the middle of the winter is tough for me in terms of cold temps and shorter days (yes, I do use a "happy light!"), I get a jolt of inspiration with the start of a new year. This is a time of year with so much potentiality. Who do you want to become? What have you learned from the past, and how can you help the greatest versions of yourself be illuminated? One way to do this is to show up.

Important Announcements:
As noted in my last e-newsletter, the Balance Studios' building has been sold, but we'll continue to offer classes in the space through the end of February. In March, the studio and current classes are planning on moving next door to the space located next door to Roots hair salon on Main Street in Victor.

In an effort to make yoga more accessible for students, I will continue to offer a class series rate, with the addition of 5 and 10 class packages that expire within 6 months from date of purchase. Drop-in's are also welcome. (Sliding scale pricing is available; I believe in bringing yoga to everyone. If these prices seem out of your reach, please contact me. We have work-trade and a number of options to help.)

It is our plan to continue to offer fitness, yoga, and Pilates classes in Victor, and tentative agreements are underway for a nearby location for classes to begin in March. I plan to teach an evening yoga class in January and February, so please stay tuned. Important changes and fall schedule update

If you follow my yoga page or Balance Studios on Facebook or receive Balance Studios' emails, you may have heard about the important changes at Balance Studios. Kari (the owner of the studio) sold her dance portion a couple of years ago, and has been wanting to downsize her business for the past few months. As such, she will no longer manage other classes besides her Pilates classes; however, since we all teach in the same space and work together, she will still list classes like yoga and Zumba on her printed monthly schedules. *As a result of the restructuring, we are phasing out the Balance Studios punch cards.* If you purchased a class after June 1st, you may use the remaining punches on your card through the end of October.
It is my plan to rent the space and continue to teach 1 or 2 yoga classes a week at the Balance Studios location. Through the end of this month (September), I will continue to teach "Core Yoga" at Balance Studios on Friday mornings from 9am-10am. This all-levels yoga class, set to music, focuses on strengthening your core and incorporates Pilates and Barre exercises, all while integrating your body, mind, and breath. Due to the changes, etc., I have also cancelled the once per month Sunday Restorative Yoga this month.

Starting in October, my "All-Levels Flow Yoga" class on Wednesdays from 6:30-7:45pm will start-up again at the Balance Studios location for a 4-week session (October 7-28). If you have remaining Balance Studios punch classes left, you can use up your card. You may also sign-up for the series (4 classes) for $40 or drop-in for $14 per class (I prefer advanced registration since I now have to rent the space). To sign up for the series, please contact me at either (208) 313-3503, jenwerlinyoga at g mail.com, or message me on Facebook. If you have any questions about the changes, schedules, class requests, etc., please contact me. I love to hear from you!

Thanks so much for continuing to support yoga at the southern end of the Valley!
I hope to see you soon!

Summer Ayurveda Tips

7/24/2015

Picture
Ah...the dog days of summer of summer have arrived in the Tetons. According to Ayurveda, the sister science of yoga, the summer season is associated with the elements of fire and water, otherwise known as the Pitta dosha. These subtle qualities help control metabolism and can sometimes cause us to overheat. If these qualities are in excess, either from internal or external means, it can aggravate the Pitta dosha and cause imbalances like sunburn, acne, diarrhea, anger, jealously, and exhaustion.

Some tips to help find balance this time of year are to eat cooling, hydrating foods, like cucumber, greens, watermelon, sprouts, etc. Eating seasonal food is also a good way to help find balance. Other tips include avoiding intense exercise during mid-day usually between 10am and 2pm, avoiding over-exposure to the sun, and wearing light colored clothing like white and blue since those colors reflect sunlight. Practicing calming yoga styles and postures are also great tools to find balance and help with burnout. Restorative yoga can help you to slow down, be present, and find a balance from the frenetic pace of summer activities.

This Sunday afternoon (July 26), I will be teaching another restorative yoga class at Balance Studios in Victor (the 4th Sunday of the month from 4:30-5:45pm). The next summer restorative class will be August 23. We'll begin class with gentle movement, followed by longer restorative postures using props and blankets. All-levels, including pre and post-natal are welcome! You may use your class punch card or drop-in for just $12. Please register in-advance, if possible here (pay at the studio with either cash or check or use your class punch card).

I am also teaching "Core Yoga" at Balance Studios on Friday mornings from 9am-10am. This all-levels yoga class, set to music, focuses on strengthening your core and incorporates Pilates and Barre exercises, all while integrating your body, mind, and breath.

Many thanks to you and enjoy the rest of the summer!

Summer Restorative Yoga

6/26/2015

Happy summer to all of you! If you're like me, you've maybe been socializing and playing hard this spring and summer—BBQ's, music, biking, hiking, running, swimming, etc., AND your body and soul could use a little self-love. The good news is that restorative yoga can really help you slow down from the frenetic pace of life, and help you hit the reset button. Too much activity and not enough rest can often lead to physical and mental burn out, especially during the summer when the temperatures begin to rise. This is particularly true for "pitta" types (the dosha associated with fire and water). Learn more about Ayurvedic doshas, here, and read about the benefits of restorative yoga, here. Regardless of your dominant dosha or constitution, occasionally practicing restorative yoga can really help you to find physical, mental, and emotional balance. Some people believe that restorative yoga can even be better than a massage!

This summer, I will be teaching a restorative yoga class at Balance Studios in Victor on the 4th Sunday of the month from 4:30-5:45pm. This Sunday, June 28th will be the first class in this series. Other classes will be July 26 and August 23. We'll begin class with gentle movement, followed by longer restorative postures. All-levels, including pre and post-natal are welcome! You may use your class punch card or drop-in for just $12. Please register in-advance, if possible here (register as "unpaid" since the studio only accepts cash or check).

Also, continuing throughout the summer, I'll be teaching "Core Yoga" at Balance Studios on Friday mornings from 9am-10am. This all levels yoga class will focus on strengthening your core and will incorporate exercises from Pilates and the Barre Method, all while integrating your body, mind, and breath.

Thanks, and have a wonderful summer!
